Hunting

Thank you for your interest in a hunt with Big M Outfitters. I hope we can answer most of your questions and give you a clear understanding of the service we provide. If desired, please contact us directly for additional answers to your questions. Our hunting Area is referred to as: "An Outfitter Resource Area (OAR)", and no other outfitter is permitted to operate here. The actual hunting ground is approximately 40 miles north to south and 35 miles east to west. On the north are the John Long Mountains; to the east, the Flint Creek Range; south, the Anaconda Pintlar Wilderness Area; and to the west, the Sapphire Range.

This is a prime area to hunt consisting of over 350,000 Acres.
Hunters stay at the Big M lodge and cabins during the rifle and archery seasons. The lodge is situated in the Flint Creek Valley, a valley surrounded by the afore mentioned mountain ranges. Comfortable beds, hot showers and home cooked meals add to a pleasant hunting experience.

Located in the Flint Creek Valley, to the west runs Rock Creek, western Montana's only Blue Ribbon Trout Stream. Depending on where you are hunting, hunters and their guides might return around midday for a hot lunch, with time for fishing, target shooting, relaxing, etc., before going back out for the afternoon hunt. Three home-cooked meals as well as a sack lunch will also be provided.
The reason for having comfortable accommodations and plenty of good food is to make sure everyone is in the best possible condition and frame of mind to hunt. Elk hunting is hard work - that's what makes the elk one of the top trophies among sportsmen.

Big M Outfitters operates in excellent elk country. If there is a doubt, feel free to contact the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife & Parks about the subject - reference the Sapphire Mountain Range, John Long Mountains, Anaconda Pintlar Wilderness Area, and the Flint Creek Range. We cannot guarantee any hunter an elk, but our goal is to make every effort to increase the chances of a successful and enjoyable hunt.  Our guides always work hard to give you their best possible; they know the area, are skilled, dependable and extremely enthusiastic.

The altitude at which Big M operates is about 6500 feet with the highest being 7,500 feet or so. Even though the altitude is good, the mountains can be just as steep and rugged as any in the west - that's why the game is there. Most of the better elk country is heavily timbered with a sprinkling of open meadows, although some areas offer the classic open country. Within Big M's hunting area, the elk is the most targeted animal. There is also a healthy population of both mule deer and whitetail. With a Nonresident combination license, it is legal to harvest one (1) bull elk, one (1) buck deer, mule or whitetail . During the archery season cows and does are legal. The license also includes a fishing and upland bird license. We can assist you in obtaining your license, and can guarantee your success to receive a license. Contact us for details.

Bow Hunting

The archery season opens in early SEPTEMBER and coincides with the elk rut and bugling activity. This is conducted from our comfortable and completely furnished lodge and cabins.

This is an exciting and wonderful time of year to experience hunting in Montana, with warm days and crisp, cool nights. Our bow hunts consist of seven days, 6 full days of hunting, with hunters arriving and departing on Saturdays.

General Rifle Season

The general rifle season in Montana runs for five (5) weeks beginning approximately the last week of OCTOBER and month of NOVEMBER. We offer 6 full days of hunting. My hunting districts are some of the best in the state for a combination elk and deer hunt. Along with excellent facilities, this hunt is hard to beat. If you have any questions, please get in touch. I hope to hear from you soon.
